Segovia

Segovia

Historic city, UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its impressive 1st-century Roman Aqueduct, the majestic Alcázar and exceptional gastronomy, especially roast suckling pig. One of the most beautiful and visited cities in Castile and León.

About the City

Segovia is one of the most impressive historic cities in Spain, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its most recognizable symbol is the Roman Aqueduct, a masterpiece of 1st-century AD engineering that rises majestically in the heart of the city. With more than 800 meters in length and 167 arches, this aqueduct is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world and still functions after almost 2,000 years.

The Alcázar of Segovia is another of the city's most emblematic monuments. This impressive medieval castle, which looks like something out of a fairy tale, rises on a rocky promontory and served as inspiration for Disney's Cinderella Castle. The Alcázar has been a royal palace, military fortress and prison throughout its history, and today houses a museum that allows you to learn about its rich history and enjoy spectacular views from its towers.

Segovia's architectural heritage is exceptional, with a unique mix of Roman, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Segovia Cathedral, known as 'The Lady of Cathedrals', is the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain and a masterpiece of late Gothic. The old town, with its cobblestone streets, medieval squares and numerous Romanesque churches, offers an unforgettable walk through history.

Segovian gastronomy is world famous, especially roast suckling pig, considered one of the best in Spain. This traditional dish, cooked in wood-fired ovens following centuries-old recipes, is a unique culinary experience. La Granja beans, Castilian soup, roast lamb and Segovian punch complete a first-class gastronomic offer. Restaurants around the Aqueduct and in the historic center offer authentic Castilian cuisine in an incomparable historical atmosphere.

Segovia is a perfect city for a weekend getaway or as part of a route through Castile and León. Its strategic location, less than 100 kilometers from Madrid, makes it a very accessible destination. Although the climate can be cold, especially in winter (Segovia is at more than 1,000 meters altitude), the beauty of its monuments, the quality of its gastronomy and the quiet and authentic atmosphere of its streets more than compensate for any climatic inconvenience.
