Birthplace of Saint Teresa

Medieval walled city, UNESCO World Heritage Site, birthplace of Saint Teresa of Jesus. One of the best-preserved historic cities in Spain, famous for its imposing 11th-century walls and rich religious and cultural heritage.
Avila is one of the most impressive historic cities in Spain, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its main hallmark is the imposing medieval walls from the 11th century, considered the best preserved in all of Europe. These walls, with more than 2.5 kilometers of perimeter, 88 towers and 9 gates, completely surround the old town and offer a unique immersion experience in the Middle Ages.
The city is world famous for being the birthplace of Saint Teresa of Jesus, one of the most important figures of Spanish mysticism. Her legacy is present in numerous convents, churches and museums, especially in the Convent of the Incarnation and the Convent of San José, where you can delve into the life and work of the saint. The mystical and spiritual atmosphere of Avila can be felt in every corner of the historic center.
Avila's architectural heritage is exceptional, with a unique mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Avila Cathedral, considered Spain's first Gothic cathedral, is a masterpiece that combines religious and military functions. The Palace of the Velada, the Basilica of San Vicente and numerous Romanesque churches complete a monumental ensemble of great historical and artistic value.
Avilan gastronomy is another of its great attractions. Avila steak, with Protected Geographical Indication, is one of the best in Spain. Barco de Avila beans, revolconas potatoes and especially Santa Teresa yemas, the city's typical sweet, are delicacies that cannot be missed. The restaurants in the historic center offer an authentic culinary experience in an incomparable medieval atmosphere.
Avila is a perfect city for a weekend getaway or as part of a route through Castile and León. Its strategic location, less than 100 kilometers from Madrid, makes it an accessible destination. Although the climate can be cold, especially in winter (Avila is one of the highest cities in Spain at 1,131 meters), the beauty of its cobblestone streets, the majesty of its walls illuminated at night and the quiet and authentic atmosphere more than compensate for any climatic inconvenience.
