Burgos

Burgos is one of the most important historic cities of Castile and León and an iconic stage on the Camino de Santiago. Its Cathedral, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, is a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic and one of the country's most imposing churches. Construction began in 1221 and continued for centuries, resulting in a facade, cloisters and chapels of exceptional artistic richness. The city grew around it and today the old town preserves churches, convents and palaces that invite a leisurely stroll.

The Camino de Santiago passes through Burgos and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. The city offers hostels, hospitality and a camino atmosphere that blends with local life. The Arco de Santa María, the Plaza Mayor and the banks of the Arlanzón river are among the most recognisable spots. Nearby is the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH), linked to the Atapuerca sites, which put this region on the world map of prehistory.

Burgos gastronomy is one of its main draws. Burgos black pudding, made without rice and with onion and spices, is an iconic product enjoyed in tapas or in traditional dishes. Roast lamb from a wood-fired oven is another hallmark, along with fresh Burgos cheese, olla podrida, Castilian soup and desserts such as yemas de Burgos. Wines from the Ribera del Duero and Arlanza D.O. regions accompany the table. Restaurants and inns in the centre offer quality Castilian cuisine.

The climate is continental: cold winters, sometimes with snow, and mild summers. Spring and autumn are ideal for visiting. Burgos has no beach or direct high-speed rail, but is well connected by road and has a train station. It is a safe, quiet city, well suited to families and those seeking culture, history and good food without the bustle of major capitals.
