Granada

Granada

Andalusian city and World Heritage Site, famous for the Alhambra, the Albayzín quarter and free tapas culture. Last capital of the Nasrid kingdom, Granada combines Arab heritage, flamenco in caves and proximity to Sierra Nevada.

About the City

Granada is one of the most magical cities in Spain, crowned by the Alhambra, the most visited monument in the country. Capital of the last Muslim kingdom on the peninsula, it preserves an incomparable Andalusian legacy: Nasrid palaces, Generalife gardens, the UNESCO Albayzín quarter and the Sacromonte caves where Gypsy zambra was born.

The Alhambra, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The Nasrid Palaces, Generalife gardens and Alcazaba fortress form a breathtaking ensemble. Advance booking weeks or months ahead is essential, especially in high season.

The Albayzín is the medieval Arab quarter facing the Alhambra. Cobbled streets, carmen houses with gardens, viewpoints like San Nicolás with sunset views of the Alhambra, and tea houses evoking the Orient. Sacromonte, with its inhabited caves offering flamenco shows, completes the Granada experience.

Granada is famous for its tapas culture: every beer or wine comes with a free tapa, allowing you to eat well at reasonable prices. Habas con jamón, tortilla del Sacromonte, remojón granadino and papas a lo pobre are typical dishes. The city is 35 km from Sierra Nevada ski resort and an hour from the Costa Tropical.

The University of Granada, one of Spain's oldest, adds a young, cultural vibe. Corpus Christi is the main festival, with the Corpus Fair and Day of the Cross. Granada is a must for art, history and gastronomy lovers, and one of Europe's most romantic cities.
