Malaga

Malaga

Capital of the Costa del Sol and birthplace of Picasso, Malaga combines beach, culture and sunshine. Alcazaba, Cathedral, Picasso Museum and espetos seafood. Gateway to the Andalusian Mediterranean.

About the City

Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and Spain's sixth largest city. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas, it has undergone a cultural transformation that has turned it into a destination with first-class museums — including the Museo Picasso Malaga —, a pedestrianised historic centre and a gastronomic and leisure offer that attracts millions of visitors every year.

The Alcazaba of Malaga is an 11th-century Moorish palace-fortress, one of the best preserved in Spain. Together with the Gibralfaro Castle crowning the hill, it offers spectacular views over the port and bay. The Cathedral of the Incarnation, known as 'La Manquita' for its unfinished tower, is an example of Andalusian Renaissance. The Roman Theatre at the foot of the Alcazaba completes the monumental ensemble of the centre.

The Museo Picasso Malaga houses a permanent collection of over two hundred works donated by the artist's family. The Centre Pompidou Malaga, the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the recent Russian Museum confirm the city's commitment to art. The Soho district, with its murals and galleries, adds a contemporary touch. Strolls along the Palmeral de las Sorpresas and Muelle Uno by the port are a must.

Malagan gastronomy is one of the main attractions: sardine espetos at beach chiringuitos, gazpachuelo, boquerones in vinegar, ajoblanco and fried fish. Malaga wines — sweet and fortified — and Victoria beer are local drinks. The city has a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year; the urban beaches of La Malagueta and Pedregalejo offer sun and sea just minutes from the centre.

The Malaga Fair in August fills the city with marquees, flamenco and festive atmosphere. Malaga's Holy Week is one of the most important in Andalusia. Malaga-Costa del Sol airport is one of Spain's busiest and connects with all of Europe. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures; in August the heat and crowds are noticeable but the atmosphere is unique.
