Ceuta

Ceuta

Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city in North Africa. Gateway between Europe and Africa, with Hispano-Maghrebi cultural fusion, beaches, VAT-free shopping and a history dating back to Phoenicians and Romans. Unique experience on Spanish soil.

About the City

Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city located on the Strait of Gibraltar, on the North African coast. It shares a border with Morocco and is, along with Melilla, one of Spain's two peninsular territories on the African continent. Its position makes it a crossroads of cultures: Spanish, Maghrebi, and a blend that shows in gastronomy, commerce and daily life. The beaches, historic heritage and VAT-free shopping regime attract visitors and shoppers.

The centre of Ceuta preserves Roman remains, walls and the Monumental Complex of the Royal Walls, which includes the navigable moat and the Late Roman Basilica Museum. The Cathedral and the Church of Africa, the Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo —designed by César Manrique— and the beaches of La Ribera and El Chorrillo offer leisure and culture. The gastronomy mixes Spanish dishes with couscous, pinchos morunos, pastela and mint tea.

Ceuta has a special tax regime: many products are VAT-free, which attracts those looking for good-value shopping. The border with Morocco can have queues at peak times. The city is connected by ferry to Algeciras and by helicopter to Malaga; it has no commercial airport. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. It is a different experience within Spain: a piece of Europe in Africa.

A one- or two-day stay is enough to see the centre, the walls, a beach and the border atmosphere. Ideal for those seeking something different, cultural fusion and shopping. Avoid summer if you don't like heat; spring and autumn are more pleasant.
