León

Historic city on the Camino de Santiago, famous for its impressive Gothic Cathedral, the Basilica of San Isidoro with its Royal Pantheon and exceptional gastronomy, especially León cured beef. One of the most important cities in northern Spain.

About the City

León is one of the most important historic cities in northern Spain, capital of the homonymous province and a key point on the Camino de Santiago. Its origin dates back to Roman times, when it was founded as a camp of Legio VII Gemina, hence its name. Over the centuries, León has been the capital of the medieval Kingdom of León and has accumulated a historical and artistic heritage of exceptional value.

León Cathedral, known as 'La Pulchra Leonina' (The Beautiful Leonese), is one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Spain. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it stands out for its more than 1,800 square meters of medieval stained glass windows, considered among the most beautiful in the world. These stained glass windows, which filter light in a unique way, create a magical and spiritual atmosphere inside the temple, making it an unforgettable visual experience.

The Basilica of San Isidoro is another of León's most emblematic monuments. This 11th-century Romanesque church houses the Royal Pantheon, known as the 'Sistine Chapel of Romanesque' for its exceptional frescoes. The kings of León were buried here, and the frescoes that decorate the vaults are considered the best preserved in Spanish Romanesque. The basilica museum preserves important treasures, including Doña Urraca's Chalice and numerous pieces of sacred art.

León is a fundamental city on the Camino de Santiago, being one of the most important stages of the French Way. Thousands of pilgrims pass through its streets every year, creating a unique and multicultural atmosphere. The historic center, with its cobblestone streets, medieval squares and numerous historic buildings, offers an unforgettable walk. The Hostal de San Marcos, now a National Parador, is one of the city's most emblematic buildings and a perfect example of Spanish Plateresque architecture.

Leonese gastronomy is world famous, especially León cured beef (cecina), a cured beef sausage that is a true delicacy. Bierzo botillo, León blood sausage, garlic soup and Bierzo empanada complete a first-class gastronomic offer. Restaurants in the historic center offer authentic Leonese cuisine in an incomparable historical atmosphere. León is a perfect city for a cultural getaway, especially for lovers of art, history and the Camino de Santiago.
