Elche

Elche

Second largest city in the province of Alicante, famous for its Palmeral (UNESCO World Heritage), the Misteri d'Elx (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) and the footwear industry. A city that combines unique historical heritage, cultural tradition and Mediterranean gastronomy.

About the City

Elche is the second most populous city in the province of Alicante and one of the most important in the Valencian Community. Located a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast, it is world-famous for its Palmeral, the largest palm grove in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. This oasis of more than 200,000 date palms, with over 1,000 years of history, is unique on the European continent and constitutes the most recognizable symbol of the city.

The Palmeral of Elche is not just a collection of palm trees, but a traditional irrigation system of Arab origin that has survived to this day. The Huerto del Cura, one of the most emblematic gardens, houses the famous Imperial Palm, a seven-armed palm tree unique in the world. The Palmeral Museum offers a complete view of the history, culture and traditions related to this natural heritage. In addition, Elche dates, with Protected Designation of Origin, are an excellent quality gastronomic product.

The Misteri d'Elx (Mystery of Elche) is another jewel of the city's cultural heritage. This medieval representation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is performed every year in the Basilica of Santa María on August 14 and 15. The liturgical drama, performed entirely in Valencian, is one of the oldest and best-preserved traditions in Spain, with more than 600 years of uninterrupted history.

Elche has a rich historical heritage that includes the Basilica of Santa María, built on an old mosque, and the Altamira Palace, which houses the Archaeological and History Museum of Elche (MAHE). The city is also known for its footwear industry, being one of the main production centers in Spain. The Footwear Museum shows the evolution of this industry and its importance to the local economy. Elche's gastronomy combines products from the sea and the garden, with specialties such as arroz con costra, dates and products made with palm.

Although Elche does not have its own beach, it is perfectly connected to the beaches of the Costa Blanca, especially those of Santa Pola and Guardamar del Segura, just a few minutes away by car. The city offers a unique tourist experience, combining first-class cultural heritage, living traditions and quality gastronomy, all in a quieter and more authentic atmosphere than the more touristy coastal cities.
